There have been 80 new cases of coronavirus confirmed in Greater Lincolnshire this weekend.

The latest government data showed 62 new cases in Lincolnshire, 15 in North Lincolnshire and three in North East Lincolnshire.

It means there have been 195 cases of coronavirus confirmed in Greater Lincolnshire this month, compared to 204 for the whole of August.

Prior to the weekend the government confirmed the R number – the rate of infection – had risen to above one.

Data released by the government showed it was now estimated to be between 1.0 and 1.2 – the first time since March.

New "rule of six" measures took effect on Monday, banning groups of more than six indoor or outdoor, with some exceptions.

Nationally, cases increased by 6,832 to 368,504 over the weekend, while deaths increased by 14 to 41,628.

There were no further hospital deaths confirmed in NHS figures for Greater Lincolnshire.

Meanwhile, the government's own tally for the county, which also includes deaths outside of hospitals or outside the county, was not available as of Monday morning.

Lincolnshire County Council's assistant director of public health Tony McGinty commented: "There is no doubt that COVID-19 is making a comeback.

"We predicted it might do as we go into autumn, so it's really important that people redouble their efforts around control measures."

He said figures for September were likely to be "the new normal" for some time.

He said European countries, generally ahead of the UK, were starting to see an uptick in vulnerable people being impacted and that the country could soon follow suit.

"We are trying to damp down the increasing numbers that we're seeing by asking people to be a bit more careful again.

"People really need to understand alongside [the rule of six] is the really important core messages of keeping your distance, washing your hands, wearing face coverings.

"The keeping groups down six is a good thing to do but keeping those other things that are really important as well in everyday life and every interaction."

Mr McGinty said he was disappointed with national reports of young people, who are currently the most affected, "treating this weekend like the end of time".

He added it only took one "overly-enthusiastic weekend… to bump those numbers a little bit further again."
