Sir Cliff Richard has paid tribute to one of the members of The Shadows, who spent much of his life in Grantham.

Brian 'Licorice' Locking, who played bass guitar with The Shadows in the sixties, has died aged 81 in a north Wales hospice after a long illness.

Born in Bedworth, near Coventry, Brian moved to Grantham as a small boy with his family and lived most of his life here.

Brian was bass guitarist with The Shadows between 1962 and 1963, joining after original bass man Jet Harris left the group to pursue a solo career.

As well as performing on hits such as Atlantis and Guitar Tango, Brian also appeared with The Shadows and frontman, Sir Cliff Richard, in the film Summer Holiday and performed on the top selling EP soundtrack for the cult film The Boys.

As well as playing bass guitar, Brian also featured on several Shadows tracks playing harmonica.

Sir Cliff has paid tribute to his former bandmate on Facebook: "I am really saddened by the loss of Brian (Licorice) Locking.

"He was one of us, in the Shadows for many years and we will miss him.

"He was special for me as he is the one who first put my feet onto my Spiritual Path.

"Thanks Brian... I'll always be grateful. God bless and Rest In Peace… Cliff"
