Cllr Colin Davie, executive councillor for economy and place, discusses the impact of the Green Masterplan on local flooding
"Climate change is having a huge impact on water in the county.
"I'd like to share with you just some of the ways we, at Lincolnshire County Council, are following the guiding principles of our green masterplan to make a difference in reducing the risk of flooding, and protecting our residents.
"Water management needs leadership, partnership and investment – and we are doing just that.
"We've led the way on a number of flood alleviation schemes in the county – for example a new scheme in Digby – protecting over 50 homes, a scheme at Middle Rasen protecting another 50 homes; and a project creating flood walls and improved drainage to protect 119 homes at Stamp End in Lincoln.
"We are also a major funding partner for flood alleviation schemes– the Louth and Horncastle schemes are worth noting.
"These have been tested several times in the last couple of years, and I'm pleased to say have made a real difference.
"Looking ahead, we are trying to use as many natural processes as possible in our flood alleviation schemes.
"Sounds simple – but it is all about managing the flows of the water and keeping it above ground and in the right place, rather than trying to pipe it away.
"The benefits of this way of working would allow us to create water wildlife areas as well as retaining water on a larger scale for other uses such as irrigation.
"And we are currently looking at how we can use this in Long Bennington, Louth and Lincoln.
"As well as this - sustainable drainage is also a requirement for managing surface water from new property developments, making sure there is no increased flood risk to the development or surrounding area.
"The world is changing and we must adapt."
