A popular country restaurant in the Vale of Belvoir has received a zero rating for food hygiene, but authorities say there was no immediate risk to the public.

The Manners Arms at Knipton received the rating from the Food Standards Agency following a visit by inspectors on June 30.

A zero rating means "urgent improvement necessary."

The pub also received "major improvement necessary" ratings in the hygienic food handling, cleanliness and condition of facilities and building and management of food safety categories.

David Green, Environmental Health Food Safety Lead Officer, for Melton Borough Council told Nub News that a representative from Eregus Ltd trading as The Manners Arms Ltd is helping the council with its ongoing enquiries in this matter.

The council has yet to make a decision on any enforcement action.

Asked about any potential risks to diners, he explained: "If there is an imminent risk to health then Officers do have powers of closure at a premises. I can advise in this instance a closure was not sought."

He added: "The business will be subject to a further revisit to check on progress soon, but it is understood that at present it is purely wet sales anyway."

The pub closed temporarily and re-opened at the weekend.

In a Facebook post, the pub reported the former landlord Reg Gambier had decided to leave the Manners Arms.

The pub also announced a limited snack-type menu, including burger and chips, steak and chips, and sandwiches.

After the first day, it commented: "Thankyou so much for all your support today lovely to see the locals back we will open again tomorrow 12-6pm sorry no Sunday Lunch limited snack menu again."

Customers also responded positively to the news.

Darren Goodey said: "New start for the Manners. It had to be done. I'm sure you will get the clientele back. Good luck, believe in your locals, Bring back the manners as it used to be, plus improve. Very simple, great customer service."

Chloe Scarlett said: "We'll carry on supporting this wonderful gem x x."

Hayley Jeannette Roberts said: "We will be there to support you Sue xx"

Nub News sought comment from the Manners Arms.
