Hundreds of small businesses across South Kesteven have still to apply for government grants to help them survive the coronavirus crisis.

The grants form part of a major economic bailout package from Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, announced last month.

As reported earlier, South Kesteven District Council began distributing the cash to 2,200 eligible businesses across the district, using the £32 million of funding it received from central government, earning the praise of recipients.

But on Thursday Council Leader Kelham Cooke wrote to 800 eligible business to remind them to claim.

Yesterday, he praised staff at the council and its economic regeneration company InvestSK for doing 'an amazing job' in processing so many claims this week. Altogether, 70 per cent of the business grants have been distributed to 1,834 businesses, paying out £22.15 million. Coun Cooke told them: "Thank you for all you do." Details of the scheme can be found on the InvestSK website,
