Chairman of South Kesteven District Council Coun Jacky Smith raised a flag at its Grantham civic offices to commemorate yesterday's (Mon) International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz.

The day is designated as one of remembrance for the millions killed through persecution during the Holocaust and those who died in atrocities during conflicts in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Darfur and others.

Coun Smith said: "It is so important that we stand together to remember the horrors of the past.

"Raising this flag gives a poignant focus for our thoughts on this anniversary.

"If we take time to reflect on atrocities from the Second World War and conflicts since then, this will help us to ensure that they never happen again."

Leader of the Council, Coun Kelham Cooke, added: "On the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, may we never forget the appalling stain on humanity the Holocaust and anti-semitism was, and still is."
