What looks set to be the last cabinet meeting for quite some time due to the Coronavirus took place in Grantham this afternoon.
The meeting took place upstairs in the main council chamber, where the full meetings are held. Typically, cabinet meetings take place in a smaller committee room downstairs. But a council spokesman told Nub News this was so members could be a couple of metres apart from each other.
One of the watching councillors, former Grantham mayor Ian Selby, sat well away from other members wearing a face mask. The non-aligned councillor has decided to self isolate himself after picking his parents up from the airport after they had been staying in the Corona virus-hit resort of Tenerife.
After council leader Kelham Cooke made statements on the ending of council meetings and other council moves in response to the Coronavirus , he was pushed by Deepings Independent councillor Ashley Baxter for the council to take a "flexible, benevolent approach" for those who may now face difficulties paying their rent, council , business rates or other bills to the council.
Coun Cooke said the government would be issuing statements today to cover those matters and no-one at SKDC wanted anyone evicted from their homes for non-payment of council tax.
The meeting also covered issues including rents policy, 'safeguarding' and policing in Grantham, before wrapping up after 25 minutes.
