Millions of pounds of government cash are to be sought to help revitalise Grantham Town Centre.

A 'full' meeting of South Kesteven District Council resolved yesterday to seek £8 million from the Government's Future High Street Fund.

As reported earlier by Nub News, the council had earlier wanted to apply for more than £12 million, but SKDC scaled back on its ambitions to make its bid more likely to succeed.

If successful, the move, which all councillors voted for, will see SKDC contribute £379,092 during the scheme's four-year duration.

The bid aims to revitalise Grantham's town centre, improve access and support local businesses.

Deputy Leader of SKDC, Cllr Barry Dobson, presented a report to the meeting yesterday, which said if successful with its bid, SKDC would receive just over £8m from the Future High Street Fund and it would aim to attract around £11.5m in match funding from the private sector.

Future High Street Funding would revitalise the town centre by investing in key capital projects to increase footfall, diversify the use of buildings and public spaces, and provide a safe and welcoming environment.

The report continued: "Ultimately, the creation of a more engaging and attractive town centre will attract diverse business, residential and leisure opportunities, which will lead to greater economic sustainability and resilience going forward."

Coun Dobson was seconded by Grantham Mayor Coun Adam Stokes, who also holds the finance portfolio at SKDC.

Council Leader Coun Kelham Cooke told the meeting: "Our decisions matter, they make a difference to those we serve.

"This report asks for approval to invest in Grantham town centre. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity - let's be bold and make Grantham great."

Coun Stokes commented: "This is a very positive thing for Grantham and will completely revitalise the town centre."
