People in Grantham will soon be asked their views on how to tackle unruly behaviour in the town centre and elsewhere.

South Kesteven District Council is due to begin a four week public consultation on the potential extension of the existing Public Space Protection Orders and the potential introduction of new Public Space Protection Orders.

This will be a decision will be made by Coun Dr Peter Moseley, Cabinet Member for Commercial and Operations, on Wednesday August 5.

Consultation for such orders is required under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO ) deal with a particular nuisance in a particular area that is having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for those in the local community. It can prohibit certain things or require specific things to be done.

An example of when a PSPO may be issued could be to help keep dogs under control within a public place such as a park. Alternatively, it may prohibit the consumption of alcohol in a specific place.

Previously the Designated Public Place Order which was introduced in 2008 by SKDC across the District due to the large numbers of street drinkers on St Peters Hill, Swinegate and Wyndham Park causing Anti Social Behaviour. This order authorised the Police to confiscate alcohol from those drinkers.

Councillor Ray Wootten (Con:Grantham St Wulframs), whose ward covers the town centre, said: "I would welcome an extension of this order. Street drinkers causing problems to passers by and residents were a common complaint before SKDC took action in 2008.

"I know that the local Police are in favour of this order continuing and I hope that the public also support this during the consultation period".

Such orders exist in other parts of the district, which will also take part in the consultation.
