Orders to help tackle anti-social behaviour in South Kesteven are being reviewed, and members of the public can have their say.

Public Space Protection Orders can be applied to defined areas of public space where issues have been identified that have a negative impact on the local community's quality of life.

As previously reported by Nub News, they can be used to trackle all kinds of anti-social behaviour.

In South Kesteven existing PSPOs require anyone in charge of a dog in a public space to:

Pick up their pet's waste

Keep their dog on a lead no more than one-metre long when asked to do so by an authorised officer

Keep dogs out of enclosed children's play areas

Another order means people can be asked by an authorised officer to stop drinking alcohol in a specified area and hand over any open alcohol container. The order does not ban responsible drinking in public places – only drinking that causes a nuisance to others. The areas covered by the order are Grantham, Stamford, Bourne and Market Deeping town centres. A request for a new PSPO has been received from Market Deeping Town Council requiring anyone in charge of a dog in the enclosed area called The Spinney at Market Deeping cemetery to keep it on a lead of less than one metre. SKDC's Cabinet Member for Commercial and Operations, Cllr Dr Peter Moseley, said: "These orders are not about restricting responsible behaviour but do offer another option to help tackle persistent anti-social behaviour that can damage communities. "The appearance of the district is important to residents and SKDC's commitment to a higher street standard enforces this. Dog fouling in particular, continues to prompt complaints and patrols are carried out in areas of concern." The number of dog fouling complaints received by South Kesteven District Council was 312 in 2016; 197 in 2017; 188 in 2018; and 211 in 2019. Breaching a PSPO can result in a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice or a fine of up to £1,000 if a case goes to court. The existing orders are reviewed every three years and are subject to public consultation. The latest for South Kesteven begins on Friday 14 August and closes on 11 September.
