Innovative Grantham council homes completed

Innovative new homes for people who need affordable housing have been completed and are being handed over to South Kesteven District Council.

The finishing touches are being made to ten new properties at Kinoulton Court, Grantham, and a further four on Earlesfield Lane, before they can be handed over to those who need them.

The modular homes, the first of their kind in the area, were delivered by lorry, lowered into place - pipe work and electrics were already fitted - then roofed and cladded before outdoor landscaping, parking space and driveways were added.

The handover by developer GF Tomlinson, means SKDC is delivering on one of its main priorities, of providing affordable homes despite the Coronavirus pandemic.

Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, Cllr Robert Reid, said: "As a council we are committed to putting people first and, while the impact of Coronavirus will be with us for some time to come, we are still able to make a difference where we can to improve people's lives and support our communities.

"We have been working hard during the pandemic period to ensure our critical services continue to be delivered and also see this important project through to completion. We are now preparing to allocate these homes to people on our housing register, creating a better quality of life for the people who need them most.

"Naturally, social distancing slowed the project slightly but the team on site has managed to continue working in a safe manner, supporting local businesses and contractors throughout."

The development forms part of SKDC's £60m commitment to deliver quality social housing. The project, comprising 14 one-bed units, has been completed quicker than a regular build, with plans put in less than a year ago.

SKDC Leader Cllr Kelham Cooke said: "Making progress with projects such as our modular homes is key to our recovery from the Coronavirus pandemic, supporting residents during and after the crisis.

"We remain determined to create stronger communities through targeted growth, leading to economic development and living town centres to put our district firmly on the map."

SKDC says affordable housing is in short supply across the country and South Kesteven is no exception.

The modular format creates energy-efficient homes with lifetime features, which means they are fully accessible and easily adaptable for additional needs at minimal cost.

They arrive from the manufacturer with kitchens, bathrooms, pipe work and electrics already fitted so all that is left is the decorating and some exterior work.
