A top grammar school in Grantham can demolish its Church Hall, which it describes as "shabby and unattractive."

The Kings School at 1 Brook Street has gained planning approval from South Kesteven District Council to replace it with a modern-looking modular building.

The planning application said the Church Hall, bought from the diocese some years ago, has been used as an overflow classroom.

"The current Church Hall is in an ever worsening state of repair and is no longer suitable for education purposes."

Aged 40-50 years, the school had planned to replace it with a new classroom block, which had gained planning approval. But since the school couldn't raise enough funding, it had to come up with the cheaper building modular proposal, as previously reported by Nub News.

Recommending approval, council planning staff said advertising the planning application delivered no letters of representation from the public.

The Council's Conservation Officer also raised no objection to the proposal.

Their report continued: "By virtue of the nature of the proposed works, the proposal would be have no adverse impact on the host building, streetscene and surrounding context.

"The development would not cause harm to the character and appearance of the Conservation Area or the site as a whole in accordance with [local and national planning policies]."
