Grantham appears to have joined the nationwide panic buying frenzy for hand sanitisers.

Stores contacted by Grantham Nub News today did not have any supplies of the gels in the wake of the coronavirus scare, though some hoped to get fresh stock soon.

Boots on St Peter's Hill does not sell hand sanitisers.

A staff member told us: "We have had people coming in and saying they cannot find it anywhere."

Morrisons on Newton Street has "sold out completely" but they hoped for a fresh delivery tonight.

Home Bargains on Sankt Augustin Way did not have any sanitisers but hoped for some tomorrow.

The Asda Pharmacy on Union Street said it sold out last week. It hoped for fresh supplies at the weekend but they never arrived.

A staff member told Grantham Nub News she had heard other stores also "soon ran out quickly".

The disappearance of the gels from shops and chemists come as the government launches a campaign to try and halt the spread of coronavirus.

Adverts will warn that some viruses can live on surfaces for hours and that people should wash their hands more regularly and for up to 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser.

The campaign recommends people wash their hands when they come in from work, after blowing their nose, coughing or sneezing, and before they eat or handle food.
