Grantham pub closures appear to have prevented trouble with travellers after funeral

Many pubs and bars in Grantham town centre closed yesterday and Wednesday, due to the funeral of a town traveller.

Those who have been 'shielding' were also warned to avoid Grantham town centre yesterday in the event of large numbers of people.

Among the places to close were the Nobody Inn, the Isaac Newton, Chequers and the Apple Tap.

Yesterday evening, Grantham town centre appeared almost as quiet in the firm lockdown phase, when bars and restaurants were not allowed to open.

However, away from the high street, the Beehive remained open, but customers were asked if they were local.

The Old Bank was another to stay open, along with the Cinco Lounge.

Lincolnshire Police said they believe the funeral happened at 10.30am yesterday and it was up to pubs themselves to remain open or not.

Asked by Nub News about any incidents relating to the traveller funeral, they replied: "We are aware and have been monitoring.

"There are a number of caravans parked on the verge just outside of Wyville but they are not obstructing the road and plan to move on today (Friday)."

The Apple Tap, which like others will be back open today, said on Facebook: "But everyone has been advised by them (the Police). It is up to the pub itself, but again during these times paying for door staff is not an option.

"It will be to do with money and "loss of earnings" I believe."

Jayne Elizabeth Robb, who started the Grantham Area Covid-19 Support Page, posted on its Facebook site yesterday (Thur): "Information received suggests there may be an increased number of visitors to the town today (Thursday).

"With this in mind, we would suggest that those that fall under the shielding or vulnerable category only venture out if absolutely necessary."
