100th Birthday delays village roadworks north of Grantham so party can happen

By The Editor 7th Aug 2020

A man can celebrate his 100th birthday party tomorrow after a councillor managed to delay some roadworks.

Lincolnshire County Council Highways were due to carry out the dressing of the road surface at the Drift in Syston on Saturday.

But the work would have meant that the entire road, which is a dead end, would have been closed to traffic.

This would have prevented residents and other guests from attending the 100th birthday party as they could not get to the house or park nearby.

On hearing this, district and county councillor Ray Wootten contacted highways officials in Lincoln about the issue.

Now, they have delayed the works so the Centenarian can celebrate his birthday.

Coun Wootten said: "The village of Syston are a close knit community and I was pleased to be able to help out so that the celebrations could continue as planned."

Shaun Butcher, county programme manager for Lincolnshire County Council's highways team, said: "Surface dressing work was due to take place on The Drift on Saturday, but after hearing about the special birthday we were more than happy to rearrange it so as to not get in the way of any festivities.

"We'd like to wish the resident many happy returns on this special occasion."
