Six bungalows have been approved in a former quarry just outside Grantham.

South Kesteven District Council has approved the homes on a 0.45ha site off School Lane, Old Somerby.

Invicta Developments of Long Bennington overcame opposition from Old Somerby Parish Council, who said a scheme as large as this clashed with its neighbourhood plan. The parish council also had concerns over potential flooding of the site.

However, Invicta said building bungalows would create a soft, less obtrusive vista to the prominent approach to the village.

The proposed use would fit in with the surrounding, including using stone to reflect local styles, Invicta added.

A report by council planning staff said SKDC received 11 letters of representation.

The letters raised concerns over flooding, the proposal being contrary to the Old Somerby Neighbourhood Plan, the scheme would harm wildlife and it was an overdevelopment of the site resulting in cramped development.

However, SKDC planning staff backed conditional approval of the scheme.

They concluded: "The principle of residential development in this location is acceptable and would not adversely impact upon character of the area, residential amenity or highway safety and as such the proposal is considered to be acceptable in line with [local and national planning] policies."
