Grantham area warning of bogus speeding fines
People are being asked to watch out for bogus speeding fines, which are being being sent out by email and post.
A Grantham resident received what appeared to be
a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) from Warwickshire Police which was correctly addressed however, the ticket displayed a car and registration that was unknown to the recipient. Grantham county and district councillor Ray Wootten, a former policeman, says the worried resident contacted him earlier this week about the matter. After making several enquries and receivinbg several messages, the motorist eventually concluded the ticket was bogus. From time to time Warwickshire Police has been made aware of various scams nationally including their force where a member of the public receives a bogus NIP by post or email. One of the latest scams comes from fraudsters who are targeting motorists with realistic emails claiming to have photographic evidence of speeding. Warwickshire Police state that they only send out NIP's by post and that anyone who receives an email of this nature should delete it immediately. As reported by Action Fraud before, the aim of these emails is to get people to click on the link to "check the photographic evidence" which leads to banking trojan malware. Coun Wootten said: "Having attended a virtual scams awareness course by the Citizens Advice Bureau a couple of weeks ago, this raised my suspicions straight away. "Anyone who would like advice on this type of fraud should contact their local councillor or Action Fraud."
