Grantham 'supported living apartments' backed by planners

A three-storey block of 'specialist supported living apartments' in Grantham has won the support of council planners.

The development, on the site of the former Chandos House Care Home, on Gorse Road, will come before the planning committee of South Kesteven District Council next week.

Flagtree Developments Ltd seek to build 43 apartments (five one-bed and 38 two-bed) on the vacant 0.41ha site, where the former care home was demolished in 2014.

A council report prepared for the meeting next Wednesday (June 24) says the scheme is for "supported housing for the elderly and other adults with disabilities."

Such accommodation, it continued, would allow residents to live as normal and independent lives as possible.

The flats would be let on assured tenancies funded through Housing Benefit rents and managed by a social housing provider.

The application has been amended several times in recent years, but it was still considered a major application so it would be determined by the planning committee.

Issues for it's members to consider would include the impact on the amenity of nearby residents and the character of the area, plus highway safety.

The report said despite the scheme being amended, residents still felt the development would be overbearing and not in keeping with the residential area.

However, government policies support such specialist housing, with South Kesteven having a need for it. It would also make use of a brownfield site, the officer's report also noted.

The Highways Authority also had no concerns over any extra traffic that may be generated.

Therefore, the application was acceptable, with officers recommending councillors give it conditional approval.
