An exciting online arts pack for kids is spreading the word about saving the environment – with backing from South Kesteven District Council.

The council has contributed £2,000 for the £20,000 project from touring theatre group Rhubarb Theatre, which is also a registered charity and the initiative is being promoted by its Arts and Cultural Services team.

Children at schools across the district will see how every child and family can make a difference to the environment through the online arts package.

It includes 40 inspiring activities using drama, movement, craft and music that can be run in the classroom or adapted for home. It's full of facts, figures, advice – and most importantly: fun.

SKDC Cabinet Member for Communities, Cllr Annie Mason, said: "It has been a long year or so since the first lockdown and although we've been working hard to deal with the issues that has brought, the environment is still front of mind as a resource we must take care of.

"In some areas, local and then national restrictions, followed by the relaxation of lockdown have led to an increase of littering in our towns as well as our rural areas. It's an obvious negative impact by humans on the natural world.

"Ways we can challenge negative actions such as these are tackled in the schools pack, enforcing a message to protect our wildlife and for people to be proactive in making the beautiful South Kesteven countryside an even better place to explore, walk, cycle and ride in."

The activities are written for teachers and can also be easily adapted for home-learning, which makes them suitable for parents and carers to use too.

The online resource is open to primary schools and the public free of charge. It includes a short film, Dustbin Doris, discussing themes of immigration, homelessness and the environment starting in their own communities. The story will be adapted into a full-length family show.
