Teamwork and community spirit were key to the successful expansion of markets in South Kesteven last as more stalls returned following the Government's decision to ease some lockdown restrictions.

There were eight stalls in Bourne, 35 in Stamford and 15 in Grantham. Stamford's Saturday market is due to re-open fully this weekend. More traders are expected in the coming weeks as traders restock.

Customers were asked to observe the two-metre social distancing guidelines, and South Kesteven District Council placed signs and barriers are key points to support shoppers and traders and remind them of the regulations.

The markets in Grantham on Saturday and Bourne last Thursday used the same successful formula and format that was adopted at the beginning of the lockdown to ensure South Kesteven District Council could keep its markets open for fresh food.

Stamford Market on Friday moved from High Street back to its regular location in Broad Street, where it worked well, and Ironmonger Street where, due to the large number of shoppers, small adjustments were made during the day.

SKDC's Cabinet Member for Culture and Visitor Economy, Cllr Rosemary Trollope-Bellew, said: "Key to the success of keeping our markets open has been the community spirit and mutual respect and responsibly shown by everyone involved. Like many other businesses, traders have had a very difficult time and I am delighted that we have now been able to open our markets to more of them offering a wider variety of goods.

"All three markets were well-run and busy. Public safety remains a priority and stallholders were advised to follow Government guidelines on hygiene and use hand sanitiser regularly. Customers were asked to use contactless payment methods when possible.

"There is no doubt that keeping our markets running throughout the pandemic stood us in good stead for when the easing of restrictions allowed more traders to attend."
