Coronavirus crisis: Is Grantham drinking stronger beer to forget about the pandemic?

A popular Grantham pub says that since it re-opened after the lockdown, customers are demanding stronger beer.

The Nobody Inn on North Street is known as something of a 'tap' pub for Grantham's Newby Wyke brewery, which also has a reputation for quality and stronger beers, though Newby Wyke also produces lower strength ales.

Eddie Pimlott, landlord of the pub that is a regular Grantham Campaign for Real Ale award winner, said: "I have seen a swing towards the Stronger Lagers and Ales since we have opened back up on the 4th of July.

"I don't know whether it is because people were sick of drinking canned beer over lockdown and wanting more taste/quality... or is it the fact that they want to get the same affect but want to spend less time in the pub??"

He added: "We do have a good turnover of Stronger Real Ales when we sell our Take Away Growlers... is this because they are only 4.5 pints?

"Who knows?? It certainly changes the ordering side of what people want during these testing times!!!

"Maybe its just people are so sick of hearing about Corona-virus they just want to get drunk, have a good time and forget it."

Rob March of Grantham's Newby Wyke brewery said: "There are only certain pubs that buy strong beers, mainly in cities and towns, but we still have the ones that only buy the weak beers. They are mainly in villages where people have to drive to get there.

"As regards the sales of these beers, I cannot really say at this time if they are up or not. We will only see that when this pandemic is over. Strong beers HAVE MORE QUALITY LESS LIQUID. That sums them up."

Earlier this year, Newby Wyke, which is based in Alma Park, started producing more bottled beers following on from the success of it bottling its first beer last year for the new Royal Navy flagship Queen Elizabeth vessel, as previously reported by Nub News.

Queen Elizabeth is a 6.0% ABV golden ale originally created to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Over the summer, Newby Wyke began offering a bottled version of its 6.0% Yamato strong blonde beer, followed by bottles of Bear Island Extra, a 4.9% ABV version of its popular 4.6% ABV Bear Island blonde beer.

As Nub News recently reported, Newby Wyke is one of the many fine breweries we have in our area.
