Coronavirus crisis: Grantham market springs to life as town wakes up

Now, I don't know if it was the sun, or I had set off for my daily walk earlier than usual.
But compared to recent weeks, Grantham town centre was positively lively.
I wouldn't say it was as busy as a usual, pre-lockdown Saturday, but maybe a Sunday.
Traffic was building up at the lights and intersections and you had to walk out of the way of people if you wished to keep your distance, which everybody was doing.
As I approached Westgate, in the distance, long queues could be seen.
Grantham's iconic Watkins bakery, confectionery and pork butcher was restricting numbers into its shop.
They make a lovely sausage roll, and are famous for their sandwiches, as well as their meat, but I could not be bothered waiting with the many others outside.
Higher up, there were even queues by the market.
Under lockdown, Grantham market has looked somewhat forlorn, and a taxi-driver recently told me the two stalls had gone by 12-noon.
Today, people queued for the fruit and veg and other items. It certainly looked far healthier and busier than when I last saw it a few weeks back. I'm sure I counted six stalls, including fish, meat and bread.
But the biggest queue belonged to Tuffies, a bargain store.
I continued through Market Place and headed down Watergate.
There were long queues outside Lidl and around the corner popular publican Eddie Pimlott was painting the outside of his pub, the Nobody Inn.
Eddie says he's sprucing the place up a bit for after the lockdown. Sadly, he fears re-opening won't be for some time, which is why the government he says is spending so much money on so many things.
Over the road, Asda had long queues and a busy car park.
Then it was back through Market Place, up Westgate and into Welby Street, where the Isaac Newton shopping centre was also busy.
There were long queues outside Morrisons and Poundland and outside, you could see queues outside other stores, especially those of the more 'discount' variety.
Onto High Street, I turned right, down London Road, where I noticed a large pet supplies business was open. There was also one open in Welby Street I don't recall seeing open before. Well, I guess it is essential for animals to be fed too.
Over the road, Sainsbury's had its usual long queues and there were quite a few people waiting outside M&S.
Soon it was back home where the lawns had been moved.
I wonder if people had been reading about my previous walk into town a few days ago.
Either way, lockdown or no lockdown, England seems to have become a nation of shoppers again!
