Changes to help ensure safety at re-opening of Grantham Museum

By The Editor 10th Sep 2020

Grantham Museum re-opens on Saturday morning with a few changes to help ensure safety.

But for now the exhibits will be as before as the lockdown came so soon, not many people had the chance to see its latest ones.

Fundraising director Amanda Schonhut says the wearing of masks or face coverings will be compulsoty, as under government guidelines, and there will be a one-way system.

Amanda told Nub News: "Before we had to close in March, people could mingle around, but other than that, its pretty much the same."

Things have had to move a little to help ensure social distancing and create the one-way system.

But souvenirs, such as a special Margaret Thatcher coin, will still be sold, as they are wrapped in their own packaging.

The sale of books has however, had to be withdrawn.

Hand sanitisers have also been installed along with screens at the tills to help keep staff safe.

The museum will feature the exhibition of Edith Smith, who was Britain's first woman policemen, which as Nub News previously reported, was only launched in March.

Amanda continued: "Very few people saw it because we had to close."

Similarly, an exhibition on Grantham Football Club will also continue, probably until November, to give people enough time to see it.

Beyond then, an exhibition about Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue is planned from around November, which will include Grantham Fire service.

In addition, though Amanda says it is not set in stone, an exhibition on Grantham's railway heritage is also planned for the end of the year and winter period.

"We tend to plan our exhibitions six months in advance."

But what about the unveiling of the statue of Margaret Thatcher, which the museum's Grantham Community Heritage Association has long sought?

Earlier this summer, the plinth for it was installed on St Peter's Hill. But the pandemic and related social distancing measures have delayed the 'big day' until when large gatherings are legally allowed.

Amanda said: "We are all in the dark. We have no news unfortunately. We were hoping it would have been installed this year. We have no news when it's going to happen."

Grantham Museum re-opens this Saturday at 10am.
