Grantham Museum is hosting an exhibition in memory of Britain's first serving policewoman- Edith Smith- who served in Grantham.

The opening was held on Sunday March 8 and is a permanent exhibition within the museum to complement others such as those of Margaret Thatcher and Isaac Newton.

Amanda Schonhut, director of fundraising for the Grantham Community Heritage Association, says the idea for the exhibition came about when she was interviewed on BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

During a debate about the Margaret Thatcher statue, she was asked why the museum was not raising awareness of other notable women pioneers of Grantham.

Amanda told Grantham Nub News: "Edith Smith was given as an example - I undertook the challenge to do so and weeks later launched the fundraiser and public campaign to bring about the now completed exhibition.

"Edith was the first female warranted police officer in country and served in Grantham for just over two years.

"The exhibition is a celebration of her entire life both before and after her police career with the emphasis on her pioneering work within the Police during her service to Grantham."

The launch was attended by Courtney Finn, Chairman of Grantham Civic Society; Councillors Ray and Linda Wootten; David Burling, Chairman of Grantham Community Heritage Association and Amanda Schonhut, Director of Fundraising for Grantham Community Heritage Association.

Members of Lincolnshire Police Cadets and officers from Grantham Police, as well as staff and volunteers of Grantham Museum and members of the public were also present.

Grantham Museum currently has on display a temporary exhibition for Grantham Town Football Club, which runs until May 23.

This will be followed by an art exhibition - the dates of which are yet to be confirmed. But in October, it will also host an exhibition for Lincolnshire Fire Service with the focus on Grantham.
