A week of overnight closures on the A1 northbound of the Grantham by-pass is planned next week to help construct the town's Southern Relief Road.

The work will allow sixteen 14+ tonne bridge beams to be delivered and lifted into place.

Lincolnshire County Council says delivery and installation of the bridge beams will take place over three evenings – Monday July 6, Tuesday July 7 and Wednesday July 8.

Two additional evenings of A1 relief road works are scheduled for Thursday July 9 and Friday July 10.

All dates are subject to suitable weather, the council added.

As part of beam lift and other works, a full night-time closure of the northbound A1, between Little Ponton and Harlaxton, will be in place all five evenings from 8pm to 6am.

The diversion route for the northbound A1 closure will be via A606 at Stamford to A607 to A1 at Harlaxton.

In addition, one of the lanes on the southbound A1 will also be closed.

Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways, said: "The concrete bridge beams being delivered and installed to the western side of the A1 are key components of new relief road.

"As part of this set of work, a 250-tonne crane will be set-up to the west of the A1 to lift the beams off the delivery lorries and onto the support structures the team have built over recent months.

"We will be working closely with Highways England to minimise disruption, including making sure the A1 is open during the day, and want to thank everyone for their patience while this work is carried out."

The Grantham Southern Relief Road project is being led by Lincolnshire County Council and supported by South Kesteven District Council, Greater Lincolnshire LEP, Highways England, Department for Transport, Network Rail, Homes England and local businesses.
