Push for free parking for electric vehicles in South Kesteven

Free parking could be on the cards in South Kesteven for those with electric or 'low emission' vehicles.

However, the district council is to wait and see what the government proposes.

The prospect was raised at a council meeting this week by Coun Virginia Moran (Ind- market and West Deeping).

Coun Moran called for free parking for low emission or others with 'green' registration plates in council-run car parks.

"It would be a good thing to add to our green portfolio," she told the meeting.

The council could then review the situation after six months. Cabinet Member for Commercial and Operation, Coun Dr Peter Moseley, said technical changes like this should be embraced. The issue was out to public consultation but central government has yet to make any announcements. For the council to scrap parking charges on low-emission vehicles, it would have to consult on 'parking orders' and ensure shortfalls in parking revenue were accounted for. Coun Moseley then called for the council consider free parking for vehicles with 'green plates' when the government has legislated to allow for it. He added: "This amendment gives us the flexibility to implement any changes when they have been through the parliamentary processes." Coun Moran accepted Coun Moseley's amendment and the motion was passed.
