Could Grantham's MP Gareth Davies be set to rebel against the government tonight?

Since it was announced last Thursday that the town, along with the rest of Lincolnshire was in the highest level of restrictions, the government has faced mounting opposition against its Coronavirus restrictions.

Opposition focusses on the relatively low numbers of cases in South Kesteven, with them being lower than some proposed Tier 2 areas, and Lincolnshire being treated as a single entity, when in Boston and East Lindsey, infection rates are far higher.

Mr Davies has lent his support to fellow MPs Sir John Hayes of the Deepings and Sir Edward Leigh of Gainsborough who met with Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday.

The Grantham MP has also supported similar letters and statements from district and county council leaders on the issue and, as Nub News also reported, expressed his disappointment his previous lobbying efforts on the Tier system were not successful.

Yesterday, Mr Davies met Mr Hancock and retweeted a message from Sir Edward Leigh.

Sir Edward said: "Today I went personally to see the Health Secretary alongside Sir John Hayes and

@GarethDavies_MP "We very forcibly made the case that it's not fair for the whole of Lincolnshire to be in Tier 3 just because of the spike in East Lindsey." Sir Edward continued: "Most of Lincolnshire has a lower rate of infection than many of the London boroughs that are in Tier 2. "We are considering our votes tomorrow and have asked him to reassure us by then that he will conduct an early review of Lincolnshire's tier status." Sir John Hayes has also been quoted in local media as saying he would vote against the government, unless it immediately reviews the Tier status of south Lincolnshire. Meanwhile, a pub chain with outlets in Stamford, Bourne and Rutland has praised the MP for his campaigning on the issue. KNEAD Pubs said on Facebook yesterday: "We have to say that our local MP Gareth Davies has been fighting for all his constituents today by meeting with Matt Hancock and asking for South Kesteven to be decoupled from Lincolnshire and downgraded to tier 2. "The government have indeed agreed to look into it and whilst this is by no means a guarantee we are keeping everything crossed for the 16th December. "Gareth and all our elected members have been an excellent support to us throughout and it really makes a difference to know your voice (however small in a global pandemic) is being heard!" Last week, when it was unexpectedly announced South Kesteven would be in Tier 3, KNEAD Pubs commented: "To enter lockdown in tier 1 and re emerge in tier 3 was something we could never expect! "Absolutely gutted!! "So just to confirm all of our sites will remain closed until at least the 16th December when the tiers will be reviewed. "Stamford, Bourne and Newark are all in tier 3 so our pubs are closed. "The Lord Nelson in Oakham is our only venue in tier 2 and we have decided to keep this closed too for the time being. "Really hoping to see you all soon!!" Nub News has approached Gareth Davies MP for comment.
