Popular Grantham 'back street boozer' to re-open with new owners

A popular 'back street boozer' in Grantham is set to re-open next month with new owners.

The new landlord and landlady of the The Lord Harrowby in Dudley Road are Katrina and Nigel Glover, who will be running their first ever pub.

Katrina's son Warren Minns will be manager and it will be his first pub venture as well.

Warren is a trained biologist, with insects as his speciality, who was to study for a PHD but chose to help his parents instead.

Nigel has a background in the building trade and Katrina in the care sector.

Warren told Nub News: "My mum's parents ran pubs (in Essex) and as The Lord Harrowby was up for lease, we wanted to reinvigorate the place aesthetically without altering its character and charm, we have a passion for sport, great beer, and excellent company.

"As such, it will still remain the go-to place in Grantham to watch rugby and play darts, combined now with pool, having added a new table."

The Lord Harrowby is noted for quality real ales, having being a CAMRA award winner, and the family want to maintain this reputation.

Warren said: "The real ale aspect is something we wish to continue and as CAMRA members, we intend to serve the finest cask ales produced in the UK, with new beers available every 4/5 days.

"I have quickly trying to become an expert in real ale and to maintain the standards."

Warren continued: "When restrictions allow we aim to provide frequent live entertainment and a continuation of the popular beer festivals.

"We will also start to offer 'pub grub', not quite gastropub, but hearty one-pot cooking along with paninis and The Lord Harrowby ploughman's special. In the future, we intend to extend the kitchen to offer more substantial meals.

However, like with other venues, punters will have to be patient and wait until April 12 for the Lord Harrowby to re-open its doors, albeit with outdoor table service initially, in line with government regulations.

Then, on May 17, the venue will be allowed to offer socially distanced indoor table service, hopefully getting back to normality by the Summer.

Warren continued: "We do have 3 tables per day available for booking for the first week only, then first come first served going forward.

"It is best to see our Facebook page for table availability as the most popular days have almost completely been snapped-up, but we have 9+ tables freely available for walk-ins daily."

In the meantime, like other publicans, they cannot wait to open their doors, with Warren adding continued closures have hit the entertainment and hospitality trades so hard.

"If lockdowns go on any longer, it will destroy so many

livelihoods. They appear not to have made much difference to the numbers [of deaths]." "We want to welcome the people of Grantham, both returning and new customers, to our friendly, back-street local we genuinely cannot wait to open." Previously the pub was run by John and Lynda Senior, who last year decided not to renew the lease, but instead retired after nearly 40 years behind the bar. Warren added he wanted to thank the couple for helping with the changeover and giving them a few tips.
