Grantham Opinion: What a week!

Whatever your views in politics this has been a shocking week in the history of our nation.

Government actions, and failure to act, will not only impact on the budgets of millions of households in the UK and overseas but also needlessly puts our health at risk.

This week the Conservative Government and our local MP voted for the new NHS Bill that raises the profile of the private sector.

They failed to ensure low income UK children are fed throughout school holidays leaving them hungry for 14 days and they voted to remove nearly all Covid 19 restrictions on 19 July.

They ignored calls to halt the removal of the much needed £20 a week uplift in income for lowest income households due to be removed this autumn.

They also voted to cut overseas aid leaving millions at risk of starvation, without vaccines and lost education.

This is despite the environmental and social damage done from British companies profiteering from the mineral extraction of many of the nations of those affected.

Furthermore our rights to protest have been curtailed and safeguards in place to prevent HGV drivers causing accidents weakened.

In the meanwhile planned changes to our Planning system will reduce the say of local people and local authorities over development.

There will be good people across the political spectrum reeling at some, if not all, of the decisions made in our name.

All we can do now is step forward and help those locally picking up the pieces such as Foodbank, who are already calling for more donations.

There is something seriously wrong when the sixth wealthiest nation in the world cannot do better than this.
