OPINION: Supporting Lincolnshire Communities

Cllr Martin Hill reflects on how Lincolnshire County Council is supporting residents through the latest lockdown.

Many of us are finding this current national lockdown difficult, but Lincolnshire County Council is continuing to work hard in support of our communities.

Cllr Martin Hill, leader of the council, said: "It is clear this latest countrywide lockdown will bring economic repercussions, which will hit the county's business community hard.

"With that in mind, I am delighted that we have been able to allocate a £12m package of support through our new grant scheme – thought to be the first of its kind nationally.

"The council's executive has proposed using some the authority's reserves to provide financial support for local firms, including business grants.

"We have targeted the support particularly at those firms that have not been able to access existing government's covid support schemes, in particular smaller businesses - that's where we want to act.

"Thanks to our careful financial management over the years, we do have reserves we can draw on in times of emergency, and we believe now is the right time to do that.

"Local businesses are the backbone of the Lincolnshire economy – there are around 43,000 in the county and it is vital that we support those that have not received any help to ensure they survive the financial impact of the pandemic.

"This year's budget proposals include over £500m for the day-to-day services residents rely on, such as adult care, children's services and the fire service.

"However, in addition, the council is proposing to invest around £200m in infrastructure and building projects, such as improvements to local schools and new roads.

"We are also recommending that extra funding is made available for flood response and roads as we know these areas are a priority for our residents."

"The authority's funding comes from a combination of council tax, business rates and government grants. Although the government is allowing up to a 5% increase in council tax rates this year, the proposals recommend a 1.99% rise.

"The majority of properties in Lincolnshire are in council tax band A so the council tax increase would be the equivalent of an extra 34p per week for these households.

"Our Household Waste Recycling Centres are open as usual – just please remember to book a timeslot. If you have a van or a larger trailer, we are also continuing to process permit applications.

"Our 11 core libraries across the county will be open for click and collect services only and online provision, and our mobile services will provide that much needed lifeline of books and magazines to our shielding and clinically extremely vulnerable residents.

"Lincoln Castle will still remain open for local residents to enjoy exercise in a green space. Please check opening hours.

"Our staff are also working around the clock supporting the delivery of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the roll out of further testing in our area.

"We know many businesses will have been affected, so just to remind you – Business Lincolnshire is available to support businesses' to operate within government guidance or to access financial support or grants if needed.
