A Portuguese café has opened in the centre of Grantham.

O Alentejano is at 11a High Street, the former home of Tudors Restaurant and Wine Bar, which closed last January.

The new venture is owned by 60-year-old Arnaldo Gose and his wife wife Cristina Gose, aged 54.

The couple previously had Flower the Bakery at 30 Westgate, which they say was too small.

Cristina said: "When we opened here a couple of weeks ago, business was quiet at first but it is now picking up."

The Portuguese theme, she says, makes O Alentejano different to Grantham's other cafes.

It offers cakes, drinks, beers, with a grocery store selling other Portuguese products.

There is also a games room upstairs and soon Cristina will start cooking Portuguese food.

Cristina said: "In Portugal we have more fish, here its cheeseburgers and chips."

Cristina previously ran a restaurant in Lisbon, Portugal, before coming to Grantham 20 years ago to work.

For some years she also worked in a factory before returning to the café/restaurant trade.

The premises High Street premises, with its distinctive Tudor appearance, is said to date back to the 14th century.

It is well known as the site of Catlins restaurant, which changed its name to Tudors in 2017.

Grantham's world-famous gingerbread is also said to have been created by accident in the historic building in 1740 when baker William Egglestone mistook one ingredient for another.
