Memories sought in campaign to redevelop iconic Grantham building
The call is out for Gratham residents to share their memories to help secure the future of Grantham's Westgate Hall.
The first project to launch as part of Grantham's new High Street Heritage Action Zone programme focuses on one of the town's most iconic buildings: Westgate Hall.
Westgate Hall was built in 1852 as a corn exchange but, through its history, has hosted political meetings, auctions, lectures, and fairs. It provided respite to soldiers through both world wars and it's very likely that more than one local couple met at a concert, dance, gig or party held there during the last 169 years.
The Grade II listed building has been vacant for five years but now, through the High Street Heritage Action Zone programme, South Kesteven District Council can take the first steps to secure its future.
An options appraisal has been commissioned to explore viable and sustainable uses for Westgate Hall, as well as identify restoration costs and urgent repair needs.
The council said: "As part of the project we're asking people to share their memories and photographs of Westgate Hall, to help us further explore its history and better understand its significance to the community. You can contribute on Facebook or by emailing: [email protected] "
The Grantham High Street Heritage Action Zone project is funded by Historic England and South Kesteven District Council and administered by InvestSK.
A Facebook site, created to promote Westgate Hall, can be seen here.
