Man fined for illegally dumping waste in Grantham

A man has been ordered to pay a total of more than £3,700 after admitting dumping waste illegally in a Grantham street.

Sixty-one-year-old Roy Shalliker, of Harris Way in Grantham, appeared before Lincoln magistrates and was fined £1,200, plus a victim surcharge of £120 and costs of £2,438.90.

The court heard that South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) received a report, on 20 September last year, that flattened cardboard boxes has been left at the rear of business premises in Inner Street.

Delivery stickers on three of the boxes led to a residential address in Grantham. The householder said they had paid Shalliker to collect the cardboard boxes, some garden furniture packaging and other waste items.

Checks carried out by SKDC revealed that Shalliker did not hold a Waste Carriers Licence.

"This level of financial penalty sends out a strong message that disposing of waste illegally can be very costly," said SKDC's Cabinet member for Commercial and Operations Coun Dr Peter Moseley.

"We take this sort of offence very seriously. Anyone collecting waste must ensure they have the correct permits or risk prosecution."
