Vote for Change

Lee Steptoe for Grantham South on May 6th.

I am Grantham born and bred, attending the Central School and Grantham College, before completing a Politics degree and teacher training at the University of Nottingham, before returning to my home town in 1995. Since then I have taught History, Politics and Law at Central and Priory Ruskin Academy, serving on their senior leadership teams, including head of sixth form until 2018.

I joined the Labour Party as a 15 year old in 1984 and am currently Chair of Grantham Labour, after holding many positions in the party, including standing for Parliament in 1997 down the A1 in North West Cambs. I have been a passionate supporter of Nottingham Forest and Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club since I was a teenager, and can't wait to see both play in the flesh again.

I was elected to SKDC to represent Grantham Earlsefield in 2019 and have campaigned for better council housing and more help for the most disadvantaged through the Foodbank and other community hubs. I have supported GRACE throughout the pandemic and will continue to do so long after it has receded. The Conservatives remain complacent to the very real needs in our town as it tries to recover from the pandemic. Our High Street is dying and needs major surgery to help it survive.

I am the Labour candidate for my home division of Grantham South, a seat Labour lost by just 13 votes at the last LCC elections in 2017.

During my time in teaching I have helped hundred of young people into university and places on apprenticeships and the prospects of the young will remain a passion if I'm elected onto the County Council, especially the majority that do not attend a grammar school. It also remains shameful that some children continue to go hungry during school holidays when the Tory administration, sitting on well over £200 million in reserves, could be doing so much more.

I will also continue to campaign for the 24/7 reopening of our A&E when safe to do so; our town deserves and expects nothing less.

Other priorities are supporting small businesses in Grantham along with protecting Lincolnshire's environment, including standing up for local farmers against the threat of lower food standards.

I have the passion, experience and leadership skills to make a difference locally. Nationally, Labour is under mainstream new leadership, which I thoroughly support and will pursue these principles of simple common decency and fairness in everything that I do,

I urge all that want to see some political balance in a town and county that has been dominated by the Conservatives for decades to Vote for Change on 6th May. In Grantham South only Labour and myself can defeat the sitting Tory Councillor and I appeal for your support.
