An 'instense and thrilling' amateur production of musical Jesus Christ Superstar is to be staged in Grantham's St Wulfrum's Church.

Featuring a cast of more than 60 actors, stunning live orchestra and innovative stage and lighting design, the musical portrays the last few days in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

There will be three separate stages and the show will be played almost in the round with a catwalk feel from one end of St Wulfram's to the other.

The MJH Productions show will run from Wednesday, 7 August until Tuesday, 13 August and is by arrangement with the Really Useful Group Ltd.

Production Designer Neil Martin-Lilley said: "When given the opportunity to design a production within such a beautiful venue, the worst thing to do is turn it into a 'theatre'.

"It's a huge challenge to work with the architecture and dynamics of St Wulfram's, but incredibly rewarding to create a work that juxtaposes modern performance against ancient architecture.

"By using the main stage at each end of the nave, we have effectively created the dynamic of a tennis match - a battle of good against evil, during which everyone has the chance to be right next to the action.

"The space will be intimate, intense and thrilling for audience and performers alike."

Producer Matthew Hewitt said: "I have loved working on this show, we are so lucky to have a cast of 60 incredible performers from all over the county.

"I must also thank Father Stuart at St Wulframs for his endless support.

"We have tried a create an experience for our audience and I think we have achieved that, I couldn't be happier with how the show is taking shape, this Superstar cast and our creative team are very special, it's all very exciting."
