Teenage Grantham swimmer Callum Melville claimed his first national title today with a stunning gold medal at the Scottish National Championships.

The 13-year-old swept to glory in the 200 metre breast-stroke final in a record time of 2m 34.71 secs, smashing the county record he set in the heats and finishing almost two seconds ahead of the rest of the field at the Scottish National Age Group Championships being held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow.

Over 1000 of the best age group swimmers representing over 90 clubs from across the UK are competing at the meet, which also serves as a chance for athletes to gain ranking positions for the British Summer Nationals along with the Scottish Summer Meet held in July.

Earlier this year Callum, a member of Grantham Swim Club, smashed nine Long Course Club records and six Lincolnshire County records at the City of Leeds New Year Long Course meet. His haul of seven gold medals and two silvers saw him ranked number one in Great Britain in three events in the 13-year-old age group.

Back home in Morton, delighted dad Ian Melville, a PGA golf professional, told Grantham Nub News: "We are so pleased for Callum. He puts in so much hard work and practice and it's a great result - his first national title but we hope it won't be the last.

"He has had a fantastic 2019 so far and this is the icing on the cake."

Callum, from Morton, near Bourne, also made today's final of the Boys 11-13 50m Butterfly and he is looking to increase his medal haul during the championships, which are running until Sunday.
