Grantham swimmer Callum Melville will return home from the Scottish National swimming championships today with an incredible five-medal haul and three national titles under his belt.

With his Scottish mum Laura watching every stroke poolside, the 13-year-old from Morton, near Bourne, completed his programme at Tollcross Swimming Centre in Glasgow with two golds and three silvers to deliver a glittering Mother's Day present.

Callum, who represents Grantham Swimming Club, shattered personal bests galore during the five-day Scottish National Age Group Championships, taking gold in the boys 100m and 200m breast-stroke and silvers in the 50m breast-stroke and 200m and 400m Individual Medleys.

And he showed incredible character to bounce back from missing out on making the final of the 50m backstroke - one of his best events - to take second place in the 200m Individual Medlay in hiis final race of the championships.

Back home in Morton, delighted dad Ian told Bourne Nub News: "It's been an incredible championships for Callum and our whole family is just over the moon.

"He told Laura he was absolutely shattered before the heats in the 50m backstroke and although he swam close to a personal best he just missed out on the final. So to put that behind him and swim as he did in the 200m medley to win silver showed real determination and was a great achievement. We are very, very proud.

"I don't know who's more exhausted - him or me!"

Callum's two gold medals made him automatic 11-13-year old Scottish National Champion in the 100m and 200m breast-stroke. And he is also Scottish champion in the 400m Individual Medley as, unlike Callum, gold medallist Oscar Bilbao cannot represent Scotland.

Over 1000 of the best age group swimmers representing over 90 clubs from across the UK competed at the meet, which also serves as a chance for athletes to gain ranking positions for the British Summer Nationals along with the Scottish Summer Meet held in July.
