Around 50 campaigners including hospital staff staged a socially distant masked protest outside Grantham Hospital today.

The protest was against plans by the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust to 'downgrade' Grantham Hospital's A&E to an 'Urgent Care Centre'.

The decision had been confirmed by the trust in the morning just before the protest began.

Melissa Darcey of Fight 4 Life Lincolnshire told Grantham Nub News: "We were very pleased with the outcome in less than 24 hours notice and everyone was responsible, keeping 2m apart, so thank you.

"We were joined by staff from the hospital and we stood together outside our Hospital and declared that we will always stand with our staff."

Fellow campaigner Sarah Stock this evening thanked staff and the public for coming out to campaign at such short notice, following Monday's announcement of the changes ULHT plans at Grantham Hospital.

She said of the changes: "[They] (ULHT) are completely downgrading A & E and removing many other vital services, under the guise of promoting a "COVID free site"....what utter drivel.....and "temporary" measure, my arse!

"The plans for this were approved in an "Extraordinary Meeting" of the ULHT Board and any staff member feeling unsupported, please understand that we need you and we need the services that you provide! We need your voices!

"Thank you for those who have already spoken out. For those of you too scared to speak out, believe when I say that you are supported for defending your jobs, your profession and our much loved and much needed hospital and it's vital services!

"We have a duty of care to protect our patients and community! Thank you for all that you do. Much respect to all of you. Do not give up the fight for what you know is right! They have got this very, very wrong."

A similar protest is also planned next week from the Fighting 4 Grantham Hospital campaign group.
