The 50th anniversary of Grantham Lions Club is being marked with the unveiling of a commemorative bench in the relaxed setting of the town's Dysart Park.

It was donated by SKDC Councillors Ray and Linda Wootten, and Cllr Graham Jeal, who each contributed from their Ward Member Grant.

The bench was made by Chris Kennedy of Roll and Scroll and unveiled by the Mayor of Grantham, Cllr Dean Ward, as Nub News reported last week.

Cllr Linda Wootten, who gave £250, said: "The Lions do so much good in the community. Their strapline is 'We Serve' and they do an amazing job serving and supporting people of all ages and backgrounds in their local communities. That is what community means to me; it's all about those people within it - and the same holds true for the Lions."

Cllr Ray Wootten, who contributed £400, said: "It's the service to the community down the decades that drew me to the Lions when I became a member many years ago. I'm more involved with council work now but for the Lions, it's the same now as it was then when I was more able to actively support them - and helping provide this bench is a good way to show my support today."

Cllr Jeal gave £500 from his grant fund.

President of Grantham Lions Godfrey Mckinder said: "We cover Grantham and District and have been serving the community for 50 years.

"We have a community services team that deals with funding requests from the general public, and also support groups that cater for people from our area, such as Diabetes UK, Macmillan, the new GRACE group and the foodbank.

"Some people phone in who need help with a specific project and we try to help them too. I said it would have something nice to mark the anniversary and the three councillors got things moving through their own SKDC charity grants."

Grantham lions Club is a member of Lions Clubs international, supporting good causes in the local community and also providing help to disaster zones around the world.
