The founder of the Methodist Church may soon be honoured with a commemorative blue plaque in Grantham.

The Grantham Civic Society has put forward plans for a tribute to John Wesley to South Kesteven District Council.

Following his religious conversion in 1738, Wesley committed himself to evangelising across England as a travelling preacher, promoting his newfound faith.

On February 18, 1747, the influential figure made a stop at the White Lion Inn during one of his journeys. In recent years, the historic establishment has been transformed into office space, now known as Lindpet House.

The applicant is hoping to mount the blue plaque on the front facade of this Grade II Listed building, acknowledging its significant link to the town.

"The plaque is proposed to be sited on a visually accessible location on the front elevation of Lindpet House, facing Market Place, with the consent of the owner," wrote the Grantham Civic Society in its initial planning documents.

"It will be secured with concealed stainless steel screws with fixed into plug drill into mortar joints where possible.

"The plaque measures 500mm in diameter and matched all the other such plaques previously approved the town in size, material and colour."

If approved, the tribute to Wesley will join an illustrious list of blue plaques in the town commemorating figures such as Margaret Thatcher, Isaac Newton, and Charles Dickens.

Among the most recent tributes to gain approval was one for Mary Anne Rawle, a celebrated suffragette and friend of the Pankhurst family.

In 2018, SKDC officially approved a £550 plaque in her honour, which is prominently displayed on the front of the Grade II listed Westgate Hall, situated to the east of Market Place.
