Residents opposing a major housing scheme on the edge of Grantham are working on a fresh move to help save the site from development.
The campaigners have won the support of Londonthorpe and Harrowby Without Parish Council, some of whose members are now preparing to submission to have the site declared an 'Asset of Community Value'.
As revealed by Nub News recently, South Kesteven District Council began a consultation with residents over its proposals for 65 affordable homes on the former on the former Blessed Hugh More School site.
The consultation finished earlier this month.
SKDC says the homes on the 2.8ha site bounded by Rosetti Court, Tennyson Avenue, Burns Close, Windsor Drive, Scotney Drive and Sandringham Drive, would be for people on its housing register – those who most urgently need a home.
However, opponents to the plans say the open space is used by dogwalkers, the site is at risk of flooding and the development could lead to traffic problems in the area.
Residents have begun sending their messages of support to Londonthorpe and Harrowby Without Parish Council, explaining how they use the 2.8ha site.
Among them, Rachel Parnham has appealed for more support on social media this week.
She said on Facebook: "We have all worked incredibly hard to stop the development..it is not stopped..it is PAUSED. We are not safe...we are still very much fighting."
The mum, whose 8-year-old son has been leafletting residents on the issue, added: "This is for you to say HOW YOU UTILISE THE FIELD. NOT why you don't want a development. Examples, doig walking, fitness, to play games in, etc."
Peter Armstrong, clerk of Londonthorpe and Harrowby Without Parish Council, told Nub News he wants submissions from people as soon as possible.
He said: "We are trying to put something together to make it an asset of community value. We have two people that have been very involved with our campaign and they have been spreading messages around Facebook.
"We have 60 people that have sent letters or emails of support in and with many representing two or more people, that is probably more than 100 people supporting us.
"We are also looking at everything we should be doing to drum up support, but with the pandemic, everything is so difficult.
Peter said messages should be sent to him at [email protected] .
Then, in the next week or so, he and fellow supporters can start preparing their submission to South Kesteven District Council.
