Grantham: Big Green Week raises wishes on environment and climate

Last week, events have taken place across the country under the Climate Coalition banner to celebrate action that has been taken on the climate and to call for a cleaner, greener world that works for everyone. It took takes place in the same week as the global youth protests which have re-started for the first time since Covid.

South Lincolnshire Green Party organised a series of very different events during the week, from protests against the cutting down of 67000 trees in the Homes for England proposal at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks and a climate strike, to a wine tasting event and a market stall.

Our message is clear – everything we do is connected and it is all affected by climate change. The support we have had demonstrate that the people of Grantham get it. But do our councillors? Does our Government? Many are people are worried; some think it's too late. The message we have from residents to them is

Act Now! Is a cheap bottle of wine good value for money?

There can be a hidden cost of cheap bottles of wine. Local wine company, Feel Good Grapes, ran a wine tasting at Grantham House and showed how the cheaper wines on the shelves are, by their nature, linked with the single-minded production of that wine, ignoring the impact on soil, nature and the local economy. They are also linked with unsustainable agriculture, such as the destruction of natural habitats we see across the world. High volume wine therefore can often mean vines planted where they shouldn't be, in many hectares of monoculture, because the profit margins on each bottle are so low. The change needed in the wine industry is indicative of the changes needed across agriculture. It certainly made us think.

We want to talk about climate change

Over the weekend, we met residents from all parts of the town at the market and our climate strike. One thing brought us together – wanting to talk about climate change. But is anyone listening? To give a flavour of how we might make a difference, the Grantham Growers collective supplied us with a range of local produce that they grow on their allotments; the Otter Trust provided us with leaflets, quizzes and badges (very popular) about otters; many people who stopped to chat did not know that we have otters on the River Witham, so it gave us a chance to talk about the biodiversity this unique and valuable ecosystem supports, which includes the native white clawed crayfish. Both are protected species and the River Witham is important as a crayfish habitat. Sustrans gave us maps showing local and national cycle routes. Some people had not heard of the Sustrans network and so we were able to raise the profile of this important charity that works to provide us with local and national cycle routes. Above all, we were thrilled with the engagement with our climate-ometer and wishes tree. We collected people's views and collated their wishes into a word cloud. Residents want to take action, but they need leadership to help them understand the best course of action. Many people told us that they had stopped eating meat or were using their car less, but they don't know what impact that is having, or whether it is enough. They hope so. The Green Party is a political party, but above all, locally, we are activists – we believe that action on climate change is above politics, but we will continue to work to bring the voices of those who want to leave a planet fit for the future generations to those in power, both in the community and at the ballot box. Our climate wishes

I wish SKDC would listen more and at honour concerns; preserve trees and hedges and wildlife for future generations; we need to act now before it's too late; I wish people would eat less meat; more orchards. make the world full of love; climate change; more fruits; fresh air; impose strict regulations on big factories; think international; massive investment in public transport; the government need to do more; a better future for my children and grandchildren; just do something now for a young people; fossil fuel companies take more action; I wish they would stop cutting down trees in the rainforests; the climate issue needs to be above politics; local government issues made simple for all to adopt; I wish that people could vote in the parties that care at least a bit about climate change; more plant-based eating; I wish for everyone to use their vehicles for essential trips only; stop eating meat; educate everyone especially children; I wish we had more progressive responsible government; no nuclear proliferation; more trees; stop using shark fins as medicine; I wish we weren't so selfish; intelligence is not the same as wisdom; restoration of British woodlands; large organisations to take responsibility for combating climate change; don't litter; cut down fewer trees; follow the science; I wish people wouldn't put themselves before the climate; the Green party to win in Germany; I need to save the planet for my grandchildren; I wish the government would "do" not "talk"; I hope we're able to make a difference quickly enough to have a healthy environment for a grandchildren; more investment in public transport; reduce plastic; look after the planet - it's the only one we have; less rubbish in our oceans; preserve wildlife habitats; Government needs to take action before it's too late; keep things local; save the ocean; no plastic; recycle more; improve public transport and make it affordable; focus imports on reversing biodiversity loss worldwide; a cohesive effort globally by governments to end dependency on fuel and they delicate ecosystem; recyclable energy when it's gone it's gone forever; take action now; people need to understand the urgency of the situation.
