Funding shortfall forces review of Grantham projects

A multi-million pound shortfall in a major grant application to regenerate Grantham town centre is forcing a review of the projects that might be delivered.

But, subject to further approval by central government, work on various schemes could start this spring.

On Boxing Day (December 26), Coun Kelham Cooke, the leader of South Kesteven District Council, revealed that Grantham had received a £5.6M Christmas present from the government, as previously reported by Nub News.

The council worked with its economic regeneration company InvestSK, as well as local employers, on putting its bid together.

The project proposals submitted as part of the bid were developed following consultation with local businesses, strategic stakeholders and local residents.

They include transforming the access gateway into the town, converting empty retail units into new homes and workplaces, and investing in other vital infrastructure and public realm enhancements.

However, the council's economic ambitions may have to be scaled down further, based on what was offered by Communities Minister Robert Jenriock.

Earlier, SKDC had considered seeking £12M but reduced its ambitions to boost its chances of success, as previously reported by Nub News.

InvestSK told Nub News: "We're delighted to have received an in principle funding offer from the Government's Future High Street programme. This is a unique opportunity to bring forward ambitious regeneration plans for Grantham and breathe new life into the town.

"Given the scheme was oversubscribed, it's not surprising that many places received less funding than their bid – and some received nothing at all. While our original submission was for £8.1 million, we're pleased to have received an offer of £5.56 million which will enable the majority of our projects to be delivered and create a more vibrant town centre.

"The next step is for us to review the scope of our projects in line with the funding amount offered and re-submit our plans to Government for a final decision in March. If accepted, the programme will get underway in April this year and must be delivered by spring 2024."
