The Environment Agency (EA) has issued a flood alert for the River Witham in the Grantham area.

Warning residents and motorists to 'be prepared' the EA says this morning (Sun): "Overnight we have seen heavy rainfall in the River Witham in South Kesteven.

"This means that the River Witham is now rising.

"Consequently, flooding of low lying land and roads close to the river is possible this morning and into the afternoon.

"We expect the river to remain high throughout the next few days.

"Further rainfall is forecast over the next 12 hours.

"Our forecasts indicate that flooding to properties is not likely and therefore flood warnings are not expected to be issued.

"We are constantly monitoring river levels, and have staff in the field checking for blockages and clearing weedscreens.

"Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."
