St Wulfram's Church is to commission a new flag to commemorate next year's 1300th anniversary of the death of its patron saint.

And artists of all ages from across the community are being invited to put pen to paper to design this important flag.

Rector of St Wulfram's Church Fr Stuart Cradduck told Grantham Nub News: "St Wulfram is a great example of multiculturalism, and a real advocate for working across political and historic divides.

"2020 marks a very significant year as it's the 1300th anniversary of his death.

"The church itself has a huge presence in the town, but unlike other local, national and international saints he doesn't have a flag which represents him.

"So, as part of our preparations for this significant year, we are wanting to commission a new flag for Wulfram, and we hope as many people as possible will want to take part."

The flag should symbolise Wulfram and his life as a missionary and artists are being advised to research the story of Wulfram before designing their entry.

Fr Cradduck suggests a simple, yet effective design, using bold colours which will stand out.

St Wulfram's Church is dedicated to St Wulfram, a 7th century missionary born in about 650 AD near Fontainebleau, south of Paris.

He was the son of a Frankish soldier but, instead of following in his father's footsteps, took Holy Orders.

Wulfram was Archbishop of Sens in 693 and in 700 became a missionary to the pagan Frisians in what is now northern Germany.

He died in 720 and was canonised after numerous miracles had been attributed to him.

  • A form for the flag design can be collected from the Parish Office and needs to be returned by Good Friday, April 19.
