Scaled down ambitions to redevelop Grantham town centre are to be presented to central government later this month.

The move comes as South Kesteven District Council was awarded £5.5M from the Future High Streets Fund, more than £2.6M less than the £8.1M the council applied for.

The council had already scaled back its ambitions to improve its chances of success, as previously reported by Nub News, but council leader Kelham Cooke called it an 'incredible achievement' to be awarded so much when other councils had their bids rejected.

Members of the council's Cabinet yesterday discussed a report from deputy leader Coun Barry Dobson which outlines revised proposals.

SKDC had sought the money to deliver projects including improving the approach from Grantham's railway station, down Westgate and into Market Place.

Projects would also include creating upstairs flats, improving the appearance of Market Place, along with improving St Peter's Hill Gardens.

To meet the reduced £5.5M funding offer from central government, cabinet agreed to reduce the number of flat conversions from 25 to 22 and to remove the St Peter's Hill Garden project from the bid.

The cabinet agreed that it would send off its revised by by the February 26 deadline.

Coun Dobson concluded: "I have every faith we will get this money and see this take place."
