Coronavirus crisis: Warm welcome for return of a 'full' Grantham Market
Despite the cold wind and the rain, Grantham market received a warm welcome from shoppers this morning.
The weather may have prevented the full 18 stalls South Kesteven District Council said was coming (though I did not count).
But Grantham Market was looking its healthiest in a long time.
Until today, it was restricted to selling 'essential' items like food.
The stalls were well-spaced apart along Westgate, allowing plenty of safe social-distancing, even if it meant the market looked a little quieter than it actually was.
As I arrived around 11am, as the sun broke out through the clouds, I overheard one fruit and veg stallholder say to a customer it was actually busier earlier when it was raining.
There was fish, meat, more fruit and veg, keys, bread, plants and more. Perhaps yes, a few were still missing.
But with South Kesteven District Council saying it is doing all it can to support markets across the district, no doubt it will try and find other stalls. And the weather forecast for next Saturday is meant to be good so those put off by today's forecast rain will surely attend.
Meanwhile, away from the market, a couple of cafes have re-opened for take-aways, including Finkins.
Several stores in the high street and the Isaac Newton Shopping Centre had queues, including Boyes, Morrisons, Poundland and Wilko.
Quite a few businesses also had signs to say they will be re-opening on June 15 when government guidelines allow them to.
Driving home, the traffic down London Road was a little congested. It is almost like pre-lockdown times, though on the actual shopping front, there is still some way to go.
