Coronavirus crisis: Grantham tip set to re-open 'in a few weeks'
Grantham's household waste recycling centre looks set to re-open in the next few weeks.
Lincolnshire County Council is looking to re-open its facilities across the county, following pressure this week from central government.
South Kesteven District Council, meanwhile, says its refuse collection services, including bulk waste, green waste and its food waste collection trial, is carrying on as normal.
The tip on Mowbeck Way closed last month as the county council decided on government advice that using such centres meant taking a non-essential journey.
However, this week local government minister, Newark MP Robert Jenrick, told parliament he has written to councils telling them to re-open tips and recycling centres. Mr Jenrick told the Commons: "Our bin men and women have done a fantastic job maintaining the vast majority of collections. "I'm asking councils to plan the organised re-opening of household waste collection sites. I expect this to happen over the coming weeks and will be publishing amended guidance shortly." Coun Eddy Poll, the county council's executive member for waste, accepted having no such services was frustrating but said "we are working towards a date in the next few weeks," which will be announced when possible. He said: "We are working hard with our partners, both in the county and the East Midlands, to find a way to reopen as soon as possible. "For us, it isn't as simple as just opening the doors. There are many issues we need to consider, the two key ones: how do we keep both you and our staff safe operating within the social distancing guidelines, and secondly, the onward destination of your waste, as many of our partners are not functioning as usual." South Kesteven District Council works with the county council on waste management issues. Its cabinet member for commercial and operations, which deals with environmental services, says the country may be out of lockdown "in a few weeks." Coun Dr Peter Moseley told Nub News: "The county council have their own constraints. "I'm keen for them to bring a service up and running. The residents want that but it has to be safe." Coun Moseley confirmed that SKDC's own refuse-related services were carrying on as normal and said: "We haven't stopped anything. We have risen to the challenge." Whilst other parts of the country have reported an upsurge in fly-tipping, this has not happened in South Kesteven, perhaps because people are not getting out so much. He continued: "If you have waste stored that you cannot get rid of, you can compost garden waste. If you need to get rid of it, there is also the garden waste green bins. There shouldn't be a reason to dump waste anywhere. "If you are using a waste carrier, check their license and don't use an unregistered carrier as you are still liable [for the waste if it is dumped illegally and found]."
