Coronavirus crisis: Grantham is Grantham once more this 'Super Saturday'
Grantham is Grantham once more and Saturday can finally be 'super'.
During the months of lockdown life was a little grim with so many town delights locked firmly closed.
But today, despite the grey and the gloom of the weather, which just might be what the government and the doctor ordered, we can smile and enjoy ourselves once more.
Taking my usual walk into town from Springfield Road, which I trust you have read before, I passed McDonalds.
It wasn't 10am but though staff could be seen inside, there appeared no cars in the drive-thru, but I guess it may still be too early for this branch to serve McMuffins.
At the other side of London Road, there appeared no sign of life at Pizza Hut. I can only wonder when that might open.
Heading closer into town, Marks and Spencer had no queues and neither did Sainsbury's.
Perhaps, at 10am, I was in town earlier than usual, or finally there are far more places we can call at.
Outside Laura Ashley, which is having a closing down sale, a staff member was keeping guard, to avoid any overcrowding.
Over the road, a mask-wearing hairdresser Chris Watson could be see for the first time in ages with a customer or two in his Fade salon.
A more traditional barbers opposite also had customers.
In the town centre, Wetherspoons was ticking over nicely and as I entered a staff member kindly offered to assist my entrance. But I only wanted to take a photo this time. I will return later.
Signs explained how the new regime worked and drinkers could be seen enjoying themselves between newly-erected Perspex screens separating the tables.
Over the road, Costa was open with staff telling me this happened only on Thursday.
Next door, the Cinco Lounge remained closed.
Walking down the high street, queues could be seen outside barbers, especially the Turkish variety.
Others avoided this, by making it bookings only.
Grantham's many charity shops remained closed.
The Isaac Newton pub looked deserted, but someone could be seen in the Black Dog and a sign on the door from Marstons explained how pub drinking and dining works now.
Lower down Watergate, publican Eddie Pimlott of the Nobody Inn was making last minute preparations. He had received deliveries of some of the finest ales from Grantham and elsewhere.
Back in Market Place, there was no sign of life at the Eden Bar, but The Chequers and Edwards Bar could be seen getting ready and they will be open today.
Further along Westgate, I passed a venue that said it was opening for the first time this weekend.
Grantham market looked busier than I have seen in ages, with queues at some of the stalls. There also seemed to be more stalls than I can remember for a long time.
A couple of the more upmarket hairdressers were ticking over nicely, with one having a visit from a small media crew.
And the ladies at the House of Hair all looked lovely and safe wearing their face screens.
As I approached wider Westgate, it was time for brunch and where better than Kitchen and Coffee?
I had noticed earlier that Finkins, the Golden Spoon in High Street and others had re-opened to sitting customers, and their turn and time will come. Café Leo remained closed.
Kitchen and Coffee now has a delightful al fresco area outside, but with the weather looking uncertain I chose to go inside.
Here, you were escorted to a table, a one-way system operated, and there were signs encouraging you to use hand sanitiser.
I ordered breakfast and a flat white and while the wait seemed a little longer than usual, the staff perhaps have more responsibility.
This has always been an extremely clean venue, but today, the tables and chairs were certainly getting a good clean when a customer left.
On the empty tables I also noticed there was no condiments anywhere.
And when I was served my coffee, I had to pick the cup and saucer up from the tray myself as I was told the staff are not allowed to touch them.
Breakfast and the flat white was as lovely as always, and when I paid, there was a Perspex screen between my card and the card reader. It was all so safe but still very friendly and lovely.
Then, it was time for home and to write this.
One the way back, people were queuing outside Watkins butchers again, as they always do.
Grantham is Grantham again and we can enjoy more of its delights once more and Saturday is back to being super.
