Coronavirus crisis: Grantham is buzzing again!
After almost three months of lockdown, Grantham is buzzing again.
True, there remains many businesses still closed whether they can re-open legally or not, but Gratham town centre seemed the busiest it had been in months.
Walking up London Road, you could see some of the stores that had opened for the first time.
At one furniture store, you were told you might not enter if it is too busy.
You were also warned that you cannot try out the beds!
Nearby, Majestic Wines were still only open for collection, you could not enter.
A shop selling hi-vis jackets was back open for the first time, but like the others, hairdresser Chris Watson is still not open.
Further up into High Street, the pavements were busy and, despite the warning signs about social distancing, it was hard to pass by two meters apart.
In one small cafe I saw some children sat inside enjoying a sandwich. Is that allowed?
Outside Vodafone, which was having it's first day back open, a member of staff kept guard to ensure only a certain number went in at a time.
By now it seemed most businesses were open, but not the charity shops, and a growing number of shoppers were wearing face masks, especially the older ones.
The George Centre was as quiet as always.
The pubs of course, remain closed, and looking through the window, you could see Eddie Pimlott of the Nobody Inn looked to have four real ales on tap for take-away.
Sadly, he wasn't open at lunchtime.
Around into Market Place, were Grantham and Stamford MP Gareth Davies and leader of South Kesteven District Council Coun Kelham Cooke, who had been surveying the re-opening of the stores.
Among the businesses they had visited were Kay's of Grantham, the Westgate retailer of Women's Clothing.
Heading that way myself, it looks like a new bar might be opening when allowed, and people were still queuing for Watkins' famous sandwiches and sausage rolls.
But the longest queue was at Sports Direct, in the Sankt Augustin Retail Park, where the line of people went all the way round the block.
Well, with Kitchen and Coffee not being open for a take-away today, so unlike Saturday, I headed home.
Well I never, you can now go inside KFC on Harlaxton Road. Numbers are limited and you cannot sit inside.
It doesn't seem that long ago it re-opened for drive-thu, but I was told it was four weeks ago and the outlet had been open for take-aways for a week.
I asked about the Burger King next door, but as it's one of the smaller branches, a staff member told me that might not re-open until August.
Then, eating lunch on the way, it was past the Co-op where a small queue was outside in the sun.
Admittedly there is still much to re-open, but Grantham is buzzing again and as its most famous daughter once said "Rejoice, rejoice at that news!"
